2017 Bill Aston Quality Improvement Summit

This year’s Bill Aston Quality Improvement Summit was held on October 17th at the Waxahachie Civic Center. Baylor Scott & White Health’s (BSWH) annual Bill Aston Quality Improvement Summit provides a large forum for celebrating and rewarding quality improvement successes and sharing quality improvement initiatives and processes throughout the organization. This was the 11th annual Summit for BSWH and 64 improvement teams were nominated for awards.

During the Summit, quality improvement teams are recognized for their efforts. To be eligible for an award, a team must be nominated by its hospital or facility for its work to establish and maintain improvement consistent with STEEEP (safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care) aims and BSWH’s strategic areas of focus (quality, people, service, and finance). Winning teams are formally recognized by the CEO and other senior-level leaders at the Summit. The Bill Aston Quality Improvement Summit encourages the spread of successful quality improvement initiatives and processes.

The guest speaker at this year’s Summit was Michael Millenson, an expert in the field of health care quality and President of Health Quality Advisors LLC. Michael’s presentation was very well received as he highlighted that health care professionals and providers must challenge themselves to do better and push to further improve the delivery of care for patients.

BSWH CEO, Jim Hinton, spoke of the transformation that BSWH is going through today to be successful in the future and BSWH Board Chair, Jim Turner honored the late Bill Aston and the board’s commitment to the Quality Resolution.

The following teams were awarded at the Summit this year:

People:

1st Place– Scott & White Center for Diagnostic Medicine- Reducing Support Staff Turnover

2nd Place– Paul and Judy Andrews Women’s Hospital- Our Nurses for Our Patients: Building and Retaining a Committed, Confident, and Engaged Workforce in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

3rd Place– Baylor Scott & White Medical Center- College Station- Engaging People to Share Ideas and Move Aligned Metrics

Quality:

1st Place– Baylor Scott & White Medical Center- McKinney- Breathing Easier: Evidence Based Process Improvement in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

2nd Place– The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano- The Right Meds for the Right Outcomes

3rd Place– Baylor Scott & White- McLane Children’s- Implementing a Comprehensive CLABSI Initiative

Service:

1st Place- Baylor University Medical Center- Team RED: Reducing Emergency Delays

2nd Place- Scott & White Cardiology Clinic- Temple- Next Available Consults

3rd Place– Paul and Judy Andrews Women’s Hospital- Improving the Way We Communicate with Patients on the Gynecology Unit at Andrews Women’s Hospital

Finance:

1st Place– Baylor University Medical Center- Collaborative Multi-Disciplinary Rounds (MDRs) Drives Length of Stay Reductions

2nd Place- Baylor Scott & White- McLane Children’s- Cost Effectiveness of Online Meal Ordering

3rd Place– Baylor Scott & White Medical Center- Hillcrest- McClinton Cancer Center- Development of an Oncology Financial Navigation Program

Overall, the 2017 Bill Aston Quality Improvement Summit was a success and employees were encouraged to continue their quality improvement efforts to enhance the care for BSWH’s patients.
